Old Whittier School stood for the first half of the twentieth century in the square bounded by Mansion, Woodlawn, Kensington, and Osage Avenues in Price Hill. The building was struck by lightning and burned to the ground on the evening of the last day of school in June 1961. The land where the school once stood is now occupied by a community green space called Whittier Gardens. A new Whittier School was built on Hawthorne Avenue, but the school district recently demolished it, and that site is now a community vegetable garden.
